White Ribbon of Death

Well… I am starting to get extremely anxious for the mountains to open. How about you? I have been doing CrossFit training for a few months now, and cannot wait to reap the benefits on my snowboard. With opening day right around the corner, it’s time to dust off that board, throw on a fresh layer of wax and try on your outfit (goggles and all) and get stoked!

Here is a shot from A-basin yesterday. The “White Ribbon of Death” is almost here.

“Barbara”

This past Tuesday, I showed up to my gym D-town Crossfit as usual. If you are not familiar with how it works, I never find out what the WOD (Workout of the day) is until I walk into the gym and see it written on the white board. This is probably a good thing, because if I had known what I was about to go through, I probably would have taken the day off. But I showed up.

Halfway through the warm up, I realized I hadn’t checked the day’s WOD yet. When I turned and saw the details, my heart sank. I quickly looked at my coach and began shaking my head laughing. I knew it was going to be a rough day.

WOD:  “Barbara”

5 Rounds for time

20 Pullups

30 Pushups

40 Situps

50 Air Squats

Rest 3 minutes after each round.

I am still sore two days later. (After 100 pull-ups, 150 push-ups, 200 sit-ups, and 250 squats I have a right to be).

My Total Time: 38:12 … followed by 10 minutes of laying on the gym floor trying to catch my breath…

Rethink Recovery

I notice that a lot of people at my crossfit gym dump protein powder into a glass of water, and chug it to feed the muscles post-WOD. There must be a better way…

I have been a life-long Jamba Juicer, but my wallet can’t keep up with my appetite for fresh fruit smoothies, so I finally tried to make my own. After several attempts, a few blender mishaps, and some not-so-delicious smoothies, I dialed in an awesome and and super easy way to make recovery smoothies.

Here is what you’ll need: Frozen organic berries (any kind), Coconut milk, Naked Green Machine Superfood, Ice, Vega One Plant based powder

-*1/2 cup berries,

-*1 cup coconut milk

– *2 oz Green Machine (I even add a little Kombucha sometimes)

– *5 ice cubes

– 1* scoop Vega One powder

MIX ALL TOGETHER IN BLENDER, Pour into cup, and Enjoy

7 Minute Morning

I’m usually in such a hurry in the mornings, and I spend more time on my hair and makeup than on making breakfast. Once my hair is curled and my cheeks blushed, I run down to the kitchen to see what I can grab. I have been eating a LOT of my blueberry muffins, but today I wanted a change.

So, with 10 minutes to spare, I made some delicious, nutritious eggs and veggies to start my week off right.

What you’ll need: 2 eggs, an onion, watercress, olive oil, salt, pepper.

Step 1 – Chop 1/4 slice of onion (with all layers intact). Fry in olive oil and cover until golden brown. MEDIUM Heat.

Step 2 – Beat 2 eggs in a bowl, and add some watercress, spinach, or other leaf veggie of your choosing. (I like watercress because it is nutrient rich and great for muscle recovery).

Step 3. Pour egg mixture over onions and scramble until no longer runny. Add salt and pepper.

Step 4. ENJOY!

Let it snow

Only 9 days until snowmaking starts and I can barely contain my excitement! I had an amazing summer, but now I’m ready for an EPIC winter. Last year was the driest year I’ve ever seen, and I did not get my powder fix. But what can ya do? After all I can’t make it snow, so decided to work with what I had and step up my freestyle skills instead. Here is a short edit my friend put together for me last spring. LoRidin’ 2011-12

Paleo Blueberry Protein Muffins

Protein muffins are super easy to make, yummy to eat, and great for people with busy lifestyles like myself. You can substitute other berries, raisins, cranberries, dark chocolate chips, or create your own version. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. You’ll need: 3 eggs, a lot of almonds, organic honey, baking soda, olive oil, and frozen berries or raisins.

*Dry ingredients: 2 1/2 cups ground almonds (grind in blender)
Mix in 1 tea spoon baking soda
*Wet ingredients: 3-4 table spoons olive oil (or butter)
Blend with 3 eggs in blender
Mix all ingredients together then add 1/4-1/3 cup of honey, berries and a dash of salt
Scoop into muffin tray (I suggest using papers to avoid sticking) and bake for 20 minutes.

Enjoy. 🙂

9/11 Memorial WOD “EMBRACE THE SUCK”

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 11 years since the tragedy of 9/11. Every year someone asks me “Where were you on 9/11?” I explain that I heard the news outside my 8th grade classroom, right before they sent everyone home for the day. Then I ask them the same question.

Though some things stay the same, a lot has changed since 2001. But no matter where my life takes me, each year I take the time to reflect on life, and remember those who lost their lives and the families they left behind.

This year, I looked back to remember that day from my Denver gym, D-Town CrossFit.

Though I only made it through 3 1/2 out of 9 rounds of the workout before time was up, I was proud of what I did manage to accomplishment; even looked forward to the aching muscles I knew would soon follow.

Here was our WOD:
